Errors in 7th class science textbook has been Acknowledged
Prof. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Prof. Hasina Khan, who were associated with the writing and editing of the book, have accepted the responsibility for the errors in the seventh grade science 'Anusandhani Path' book of the new curriculum.
However, DigiBangla's reading of the book has not found any factual errors. The first chapter of the textbook gives a wonderful description of biodiversity. The language is also clear. Read it as if written in spoken language; in conversational style. However, the National Geographic Education Web site has been followed in terms of inclusion and examples.
Still, accepting such responsibility with textbooks set a precedent in the country's history. Experts believe that the authors of books that have discussed the flaws in the past will take the issue seriously.
A joint statement sent to the media on Tuesday (January 17) claimed responsibility, 'as part of the implementation of the new curriculum to be launched in 2023 across the country, science textbooks for classes VI and VII have been printed and delivered to students. On January 15, a complaint came to our notice in the opinion section of the Daily Prothom Alo newspaper regarding the seventh grade science book "Anusandhani Path". Some of the chapters in this book have been adapted from the National Geographic Educational Site. By comparing this particular part of the book and the same text on the website, the allegation appears to us to be true.'
It is also said that many people are involved in the same textbook writing, whose labor and dedication results in the publication of the book. In particular, a kind of responsibility is expected from these authors in the preparation of national textbooks. It is a source of disappointment and heartbreak for our team if such allegations are found to be true about the writings of any of the authors. Although we are not responsible for writing the discussed part of that chapter, we accept that the responsibility is on us as editors. Necessary revisions of the book will certainly be made in the next edition.
The experimental version of the book has been launched this year and there is scope for substantial revision and editing from the next academic year, the statement said. Therefore, any rational opinion beyond the mentioned complaints will be taken seriously and necessary changes or modifications will be made in the textbook accordingly.
According to sources, the first part of this year's new syllabus of Class VII Science Anusandhani Path (Inquiry Lessons) has been accused of using an exact translation from the National Geographic Educational site. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal was in charge of editing and Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal himself, Dr. Hasina Khan, Dr. Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Khan, Dr. Mushtaq Ibn Ayub and Roni Basak were associated with the writing of the book.
In this regard, Dhaka University (DU) Education and Research Institute professor and member of the new curriculum formulation committee Mohammad Tariq Ahsan said, the textbook is basically a compilation. Many authors' writings are added here. A textbook is not really an original article or publication, but an anthology. There may be various types of writings; writings of other authors may also come. Information may come from various websites. This is how textbooks are made all over the world. No one claimed the writings in the book as their own. So it cannot be called plagiarism here. The allegation that it was wrong not to cite the source here has been retracted.
In this regard, the member of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (curriculum) Professor Md. Mashiuzzaman said that the complaint raised has been reported to the writers. They have given their opinion on this matter. The book is now in trial version. All bugs will be fixed in the original version.
